How To : Install MySQL Community Server (5.5)

So now that Apache and PHP are installed, as well as having two virtual hosts set up, we need something to hold and be able to manipulate data. What's the point of PHP without it ? So lets install a MySQL Database so we can use and manipulate our data.

First things first, what is MySQL? MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS). It lets you store, access and update data using PHP or ASP.NET.


So on to installing MySQL community server. Lets download it! Lets download the 64-bit MSI Installer



                             



Download MySQL Community Server

Once we click download, you'll come to a page that asks for you to log in, or sign up. Wait.... we can't just download it ?

Wrong... we can. Just click the link below the log in/signup section :


Once the download is complete, run it !

To Install * :

  1. Click Install MySQL Products
  2. Accept terms and conditions
  3. Click Next
  4. Click Execute
  5. Click Next
  6. Make sure Server Only is checked and click Next ( change installation path if desired )
  7. Click Next
  8. Click Execute
Wait for it to finish, it may take a few minutes.


* If at any time it seems like it's not progressing.... You have to open the popup and click allow for it to make the necessary changes ;)

Once done installing, the configuration is next.


  1. Click Next
  2. Keep everything the same and click Next
  3. Type in a password for the root user, make sure both passwords match **
  4. Next we want to click Add User
  5.  Type in a username and password, make sure to set the Role field to DB Admin (this is going to be your account)
  6. Click OK
  7. Once done click Next
  8. Keep everything the same and click Next
Wait some more and click Next when it finishes.

Congratulations... You have successfully installed and configured MySQL Community Server, now you can manipulate your data in your web apps any way you want.
